Al menos ocho personas han muerto y alrededor de medio centenar han resultado heridas a consecuencia de un atentado terrorista perpetrado este sábado por la noche por tres individuos que comenzaron arrollando con su vehículo a un numeroso grupo de personas en el London Bridge (puente de Londres) antes de dirigirse en dirección al Borough Market (Mercado de Borough), donde apuñalaron a varias personas y acabaron muertos a tiros por la Policía.
El ataque comenzó a las 22.08 horas del sábado (23.08 hora peninsular española). El vehículo de los asaltantes, una furgoneta blanca, arrolló a varias personas en el puente de Londres.
A continuación, la furgoneta se dirigió al Mercado de Borough, un recinto con varios restaurantes y centros de ocio. Allí, los asaltantes decidieron bajarse del vehículo y apuñalaron a un número todavía indeterminado de personas antes de ser abatidos por hasta 50 disparos efectuados por las fuerzas de seguridad.
En total, el ataque duró aproximadamente 10 minutos. Los atacantes fallecidos, todos hombres, portaban lo que en un primer momento se creía que eran chalecos explosivos, aunque luego se confirmó que eran falsos.
La primera ministra británica, Theresa May, ha catalogado los hechos de "terrible incidente que está siendo investigado como potencial acto de terrorismo". Por su parte el Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores español, a través del Consulado General de España en la capital británica, ha habilitado dos números de teléfono de emergencia consular para aquellos españoles que pudieran haberse visto afectados: Desde Reino Unido: 07712764151 | Desde España: +447712764151.
El ataque ha hecho que desde primera hora del domingo se sucedieran varios registros policiales en Barking, suburbio al este de Londres, y que han conducido a la detención de 12 sospechosos vinculados con el atentado.
"Por venganza"
Ya en la noche del domingo, el grupo yihadista Estado Islámico asumió la autoría de los ataques cometidos en Londres, a través de su agencia de información Amaq, y aseguró que fue por venganza.
En un breve comunicado difundido en Telegram, y cuya veracidad no ha podido ser comprobada, la agencia de Estado Islámico apuntó que "una fuente de seguridad dijo a Amaq que un destacamento de combatientes del Estado Islámico llevó a cabo los ataques de Londres de ayer".
Junto a la nota de la agencia, la misma página empleada por el grupo distribuyó un montaje fotográfico en el que aparece el puente de Londres y un hombre con un cuchillo ensangrentado y sobre el que se puede leer en inglés, francés y árabe: "Venganza. No hay compromisos... en la seguridad de los musulmanes".
En septiembre de 2014, el entonces portavoz de EI Mohamed al Adnani llamó a sus seguidores a matar a los civiles de los países que participan en la coalición internacional que combaten al grupo terrorista en Irak y Siria.

- A las 22.10 hora local (23.10 hora peninsular), una furgoneta atropelló a una veintena de peatones cuando circulaba por London Bridge a unos 80 km/h.
- Sus tres ocupantes, que portaban unos chalecos con latas de refrescos vacías simulando explosivos, condujeron hasta el mercado Borough Market, donde se bajaron y apuñalaron indiscriminadamente a varias personas.
- La Policía abatió a tiros a los tres terroristas, cuyas identidades aún no han trascendido. Dispararon hasta 50 veces y en ese tiroteo hirieron a un ciudadano.
- Siete personas, entre ellas un canadiense, fallecieron y 48 fueron trasladadas a cinco hospitales londinenses (entre ellos un agente de la policía de transporte, un español, cuatro franceses y dos australianos). Veintiuna personas están en estado crítico.
- Por el momento, hay 12 detenidos en relación al atentado.
