Moria receives stories, accounts; that is, human beings. It's not just another refugee camp. It is a compound where 8000 people live in extremely worrying overcrowded conditions.

NGOs have described this camp in the Greek island of Lesbos as a "concentration camp".

After a series of desperate emergency calls, the European Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) - a EU agency - has finally opened its eyes, and the efforts of the Spanish Euro MP Maite Pagazaurtundúa and her team have a lot to do with that. Pagaza traveled to Moria a few weeks ago and she was " horrified" after seeing the conditions of the refugee families, so she sent a letter to the FRA denouncing this situation.

A letter that has now been answered. This European agency has conducted an analysis on the field and it will conduct a new aid mission during this spring. "They were already working on it, but our message has acted as a catalyst", as the Euro MP tells 20minutos.

The FRA agrees that the conditions in the Greek centers are "well below the minimum established by the European directive on reception centers' conditions". Children are the most vulnerable group in the area.

One month ago, 31% of those seeking asylum in the Greek islands were children, 18% of them unaccompanied.

"Confronting the aggravated risk for abuse and violence" is another challenge the EU is facing in the short term. When talking about women, specially vulnerable at these facilities, the agency states that "overcrowding in certain hot spots - those areas receiving the highest volumes of refugees - significantly increases the risk for sexual and gender biased violence".

In practice, in most centers, single women are not accommodated into separate areas.

In a context of highly polarized discourses on immigration in the European Union, Maite Pagaza tries to shed some light. "It was very grave and urgent since fundamental rights were being violated", she argues. In particular, eleven of those rights are being threaten, according to the FRA.

This European MP wants to convey a very clear message: "It's good to go and tell what's happening, because otherwise we might reach a moment when we just decide to close our eyes".

As in any other humanitarian emergency situation, there are denying voices, which are actually growing in Europe. "Certain parties and MPs use this poorly resolved matter as a political weapon. These poor people are just their scapegoats", says Pagaza, before adding that the EU has the opportunity of "making things right".

"We can become better societies and these people can actually lead us by example". Within a framework of polarized and unclear political discourses, the Spanish Euro MP wants to reverse the priorities: "A touch of humanity is always welcomed. The human being is at the heart of politics". And she believes the situation to be "manageable".

For Pagaza the solution must include a "common" policy, with long-term solutions. "Limits? Yes, but offering security and bringing forward long lasting measures", she concludes.

Moria, a "concentration" camp

Unhealthy conditions: "Taking the people out of there is a matter of urgency".

Euro MP Maite Pagazaurtundúa describes the situation at the Moria camp as "urgent", since refugees live in "dismal" and "unhealthy" conditions. In the picture, two women try to cook, but they do have the minimum tools to do it.

Overcrowding: there are 5000 people too many

The Moria refugee camp is designed for 3000 people, yet 8000 people struggle in it. Government officials explain that these numbers have gone down. In the picture, one room in the compound.

"A concentration camp" surrounded by fences

NGOs working at this compound call it a "concentration camp". And actually, it is surrounded by fences - in the picture - and the process to get out of it takes forever.
