La 82 edición de los Oscar de Hollywood se celebró en el Kodak Theatre de Los Ángeles. Presentada por Alec Baldwin y Steve Martin, la gala contó por primera vez con diez cintas candidatas a Mejor Película, entre ellas, la sensación animada del año, Avatar, que acumula junto al filme En tierra hostil nueve candidaturas. Sin embargo, fue el film de Bigelow el que se convirtió en el triunfador de la noche.
